Showings of Matthew Barney's Drawing Restraint 9 at the Red Vic for one weekend only.
Shows at 2, 5 and 8pm. Also on Monday Sep 11 at 8pm.
Fresh from it's run at SF MOMA and never to be released on DVD Drawing Restraint 9 is the brainchild of multi-media artist Matthew Barney. Best known for The Cremaster Cycle, an ambitious series of 5 films, Barney's work is a densely layered combination of performance, special effects and highly original set design, with themes taken from mythology, history and biology, among other things. In Drawing Restraint 9, Barney collaborates with the queen of avante-garde pop music, his partner, Björk, who provides the haunting score. The Uber-artiste couple also co-star in the film, which takes place on a Japanese whaling ship floating in Nagasaki Bay. The film contains very little spoken word and is steeped in ancient Japanese ritual. Elaborate kimonos made of fur, giant molds of chilled petroleum jelly and an underwater slash-fest culminating in a whole new take on sushi are just a few of the mind-boggling visuals that make up this highly innovative work of art.
