Play Synopsis:
Alarms and Excursions by Michael Frayn, Britain's most tongue-in-cheek playwright is both farcical and comic. The play comprises of two playlets that share a central theme: a humorous & critical commentary on miscommunication between people in our supposed era of instant communication and constant contact. The first playlet "Doubles" involves two travel-worn english couples from different walks of life who decide to check into identical hotel rooms next to each other. They have the standard tourist experience, prepackaged to the point where blandness excites paranoia – or at least comical social anxiety. In their boxed out rooms that are mirror images of each other we slowly discover that the only thing that eventually separates them is the over-thin walls between their rooms.
The second playlet "Immobiles," is a screamingly nightmarish romp created due to lack of mobile phones. A frustrated couple tries to coordinate a proper meeting place using just an answering machine and coin operated phone booths for their foreign friend when he arrives at the airport. Broken bones and broken hearts are the result of this techno faux pas.
