Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art Show Showcases the Bizarre and the Burlesque
(New York City) Since 2005, Dr. Sketchy's Anti- Art School has been showing the world what happens when cabaret meets art class. From it's humble Brooklyn beginnings, Dr. Sketchy's now boasts 45 locations around the world, along with a book, a 2008 pinup calendar, and a critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Now, the "art class without the class" is doing a gallery show of the best work it has inspired.
Founder Molly Crabapple combed the globe to find the strangest, sexiest, and most hilarious art done under the Dr. Sketchy auspices. Artists hailing from Hollywood to Toronto to London answered the call, producing a raucous, bawdy celebration of the human form.
Artists include Seattle pinup sensation Krysztof Nemeth, virtuoso oil painter Genevive Zacconi, pop-surrealist master illustrator Scott G. Brooks, and 13 other photographers, illustrators, and painters from around the world.
Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art Show opens November 27th, from 7-10 pm at Rapture (200 Avenue A, @ 13th Street). Harkening to Dr. Sketchy's burly-q roots, it features costumed burlesque queens Lady Lovely, Amber Ray and Gal Friday, and live, obscene portraits by Amanda Pearson. Attendees will also vote on their favorite anti-artist, with the three crowd favorites winning cash and prizes. Admission is free.
Work hangs from November 21st to December 20th.
