The University of St. Thomas and the John Paul II Forum for the Church in the Modern World will host a lecture on “St. Thomas, Phenomenology and Pope John Paul II” by Dr. Michael Waldstein. The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 15, on the UST campus, Ahern Room, Crooker Center, 3909 Graustark.
Waldstein has served as the Max Seckler Professor of Theology at Ave Maria University since 2008. He was an associate professor at the University of Notre Dame from 1988 to 1996. He served as the founding president of the International Theological Institute in Gaming, Austria, where he also held the position of St. Francis of Assisi Professor of New Testament (1996-2008).
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Thomas Aquinas College, a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Dallas, an S.S.L. from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, and a Th.D. from Harvard University in New Testament. His published works include a critical edition of the four Coptic manuscripts of the Gnostic Secret Book of John and a new translation of John Paul II’s Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body as well as articles on the Gospel of John, Gnosticism, St. Thomas Aquinas, John Paul II and Hans Urs von Balthasar.
Waldstein will discuss the ways in which Blessed John Paul II has developed the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas on matters pertaining to the person, family and society. He will explain how John Paul II employed the method and the insights of phenomenology to deepen the metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas.
