Dr. Eben Alexander, Author Of Proof Of Heaven, Engages In Discussion On The Afterlife At The Cathedral Of St. John The Divine October 30, 2012

Questions about the afterlife have always been a topic of discussion and debate. To reflect on his own near death experience and the way it transformed his beliefs, Dr. Eben Alexander will take part in an “Enter the Conversation” discussion focused on science and faith to contemplate the phenomena of life and death with Rabbi Joseph Telushkin and the Very Reverend Dr. James A. Kowalski, Dean of the Cathedral, on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan.

A hardworking doctor who has performed thousands of surgeries over 25 years, including 15 years at the Brigham & Women’s and the Children’s Hospitals, and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Alexander was always a man of science, which left him little room for spirituality. On the morning of November 10, 2008, Alexander was driven into a coma by bacterial meningitis-encephalitis, a disease so rare only one in ten million contract it. Even fewer survive. Memories of his life had been completely deleted while inside his coma, yet he awoke with vivid memories of an odyssey deep into a heavenly realm. From this experience, his beliefs about the human spirit, God, and the afterlife have been completely transformed. He has concluded that we all possess consciousness, or a soul, outside of our brains and physical being. His forthcoming book, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife, offers readers a new argument for the existence of the soul and life after death, presented through the lived experience of a highly rigorous, scientific mind.

Rabbi Telushkin, award-winning author of A Jewish Code of Ethics, among many other works, is one of the most noted lecturers on Judaism today. He has been named one of the 50 most influential rabbis in America by Newsweek.

“Enter the Conversation” is an ongoing series at the Cathedral that convenes conversations with world leaders and top thinkers, journalists, activists, and religious leaders focused on the most pressing, topical issues of our times to empower individuals to be agents of positive social change.
