“The Big Read” is a cooperative project of several libraries in the western suburbs that seeks to connect communities through literature. “The Big Read” encourages patrons at each participating library to read the same book with the goal of promoting reading, sparking discussion, and building community.
Written by Chicago author Dave Eggers, Zeitoun tells the story of a Syrian-born businessman who lived in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. He paddled through the flooded city in a canoe offering help to his neighbors until the day he was abruptly imprisoned as a suspected terrorist. Copies of Zeitoun are available at the Downers Grove Library and Anderson’s Bookshop. For more information, please visit www.downersgrovelibrary.org.
Also set in New Orleans, the classic 1951 film “A Street Car Named Desire,” starring Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando, tells the story of Blanche DuBois, a fragile and neurotic woman in a desperate search to find her place in the world. When Dubois visits her pregnant sister and her husband Stanley, he demands information regarding property that was left to the sisters. He discovers Dubois has mortgaged it and spent all the money. The friction between them causes her reality to crumble around her. “A Streetcar Named Desire” is listed as one of the top 100 American films by the American Film Institute.
