The Down Town Glee Club is pleased to announce that it will participate in the 5th Annual Immigrant Heritage Week, sponsored by the Mayors Office of Immigrant Affairs. During the week of April 14 through April 20, 2008, a wide array of free or low cost, lively and educational programs will be offered, reflecting the theme of NYC Loves Immigrants: Celebrating Our Immigrant Heritages.
An event titled They Wrote Them So We Could Sing Them, is a concert of popular music performed by the Down Town Glee Club, a twenty member male chorus founded in 1927. The songs were written by immigrants or descendants of immigrants, and sung by a diverse group of men whose genealogical backgrounds mirror those of the composers.
The performance takes place on Tuesday, April 15th @ 7:30 PM in the Middle Collegiate Church, located on Second Avenue near East 7th Street in Manhattan. Open seating. Admission on the basis of a voluntary donation. Featured composers include Hal David & Burt Bacharach, George & Ira Gershwin, Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman, Harold Arlen & Yip Harburg, and more.
