Down N Dirty #4..presents SALLY RUBIN.... June 17, 2006

Femina Potens Gallery showcases its innovative monthly film series Down & Dirty: the Intimate World of Queer Filmmaking Saturday, June 17, 2006, featuring selected shorts from queer filmmaker Sally Rubin.

The ongoing series features film and dialogue with Bay Area Queer Filmmakers as part of Femina Potens 2006 Film Screenings. Celebrate and promote local queer, trans, and women video artists as we feature intimate conversations with local filmmakers, a shot-by-shot analysis of the filmmaking process, stories from behind the scenes, and the inside scoop on San Francisco's filmmaking community followed up by Q & A from the audience. Rubin's films are brave portraits of often taboo subjects such as exhibitionist nudity ("Body Politics"), adolescent male body image ("Cut"), and tragic death ("The Last Mountain"). With an elegant and graceful style of cinematic imagery, Rubin's work thoroughly conveys the depth and complexity of our shared human experience.

Artist Bio:
Sally Rubin (www.sallyrubinfilms.com ) is a long-time activist, and has chosen documentary film as an avenue for advocating the message of universal compassion and understanding. Having worked in documentary film for over 10 years, Rubin is currently editing the hour-long nature film, "Riverwebs," while co-producing and editing "Godspeed" ( www.godspeedfilm.com), adapted from Lynn Breedlove's novel about a transgender bike messenger.
Rubin's career has included films for PBS's Frontline, POV, Independent Lens, and American Experience series, as well as several Sundance and Slamdance favorites. She was the Associate Producer on David Sutherland's recent smash-hit, the 6-hour "Country Boys" (2006), about two teenagers growing up in Appalachia, and on last fall's POV special, "Freedom Machines" (2004), about the importance of access to technology for people with disabilities. She has also worked on Sutherland's award-winning "The Farmer's Wife" (1998) and WGBH's "Africans in America" (1998), in addition to having edited a number of other long and short form documentaries for local producers and activists.
Rubin has taught film at the New York Film Academy, and now runs filmmaking workshops with San Francisco filmmaker and "Godspeed" co-director, Shani Heckman. In addition to founding the groundbreaking "Straight Outta Grrrlville" festival series, she also produces local events and benefits for artists and filmmakers.

Rubin's films continue to screen nationally and in the Bay Area, including The Last Mountain's recent showing at the Film Arts Foundation/Frameline event, "Alive at Ninth Street," and the upcoming screening of Body Politics at the Queer Arts Festival.

Shani Heckman, Guest Curator is a long-time activist, publicist and creator of Shanestar Productions, winner of the Best of the Bay by SF Weekly in 2006 and recipient of the Film Arts Foundation's STAND grant 2003 . She has been curating popular queer film screenings for the past three years. Her recent short doc Wrong Bathroom has been broadcast on National TV and is currently touring the festival circuit. She is currently Co-Director of the forthcoming film Godspeed based upon the award-winning novel of the same name by Lynn Breedlove. www.shanestar.org
