Th, 7p: The Spy Who Came In From the Cold
Directed by Martin Ritt 1965, 112 min.
John le Carré?s classic spy tale gets a suitably brisk, unromanticized telling in this quintessential Cold War movie. Richard Burton is a British agent who sets up an elaborate cover story for being lured into defecting to the Communists, but he hardly needs to manufacture his disgust and cynicism over his profession. An antithesis of James Bond, the grim business of point-counterpoint espionage has rarely been depicted with less glamour.
9:05p: The Deadly Affair
Directed by Sidney Lumet 1966, 107 min.
Serious spy buffs will find much to chew on in this complex, well-crafted adaptation of John le Carré?s Call for the Dead. James Mason plays a British spy whose seemingly benign interview with a Foreign Office higher-up kicks off a series of murders and attempted murders. Forbidden to investigate these matters, Mason hires a retiring inspector to do some private detective work. Unavailable on DVD in the U.S. (as of printing)
