Chris Marker’s most famous film (and his only work of pure fiction) is an agonizing cry of love to a world gone by, the story of a man drawn through time by the image of a woman standing on the jetty at Orly Airport. A candidate for one of the greatest films ever made; certainly, it’s the most romantic. [35mm]
TWELVE MONKEYS, 1995, Universal, 129 min. Dir. Terry Gilliam. Chris Marker’s “La Jetee” serves as the inspiration for this haunting and beautiful sci-fi film. Bruce Willis is a time traveler trying to save mankind from a global epidemic; unfortunately, upon arriving in 1990s Philadelphia, he’s immediately incarcerated as a madman and imprisoned alongside a particularly loony Brad Pitt.
