This October Plays for Progress, a new sub-division of the non-profit Art for Progress, is producing the US premiere of the award winning Dutch play, 'Dossier: Ronald Akkerman,' by Suzanne van Lohuizen. This production will take place in the alternative space the Pure Project in Nolita - where a show of thematically related visual art will hang in the space concurrently. All of these works have been donated by artists from the New York community, as well as the global one, and are available to interested parties by way of silent auction - the proceeds of which will benefit Plays for Progress and Gay Men's Health Crisis.
In the play itself, Ms. Von Lohuizen, while exploring a relationship between a patient and a nurse, brings up a number of themes: preconceptions about AIDs, issues of humanity, and euthanasia. Through a mixture of narration and dialogue, the two main characters reconstruct the period they spent together. The dialogue is cogent, yet dusted with humor. The well-crafted new translation evokes a world of unuttered emotions. The play takes several very difficult and sometimes explosive topics and yields the audience an insight into the nature of relationships and self-awareness.
Tickets are $18- in advance, $22- at the door. There is a $15- student rate. Tickets may be purchased at www.smarttix.com, and are available for performances at 8pm, on Oct. 5th and 12th, and for performances at 3pm and 8pm on Oct. 6th and 13th.
