Hot club music is one of the most exciting styles a guitarist can play, where nuance and melodic structure are as important as technique. Its recent renaissance can be credited to a few captivating players. Dorado Schmitt, born in France to a gypsy family (the same Sinti heritage Django Reinhardt came from), is one of that rare breed. His jaw-dropping technique and powerful, graceful sound catch the ear, but his memorable melodies stay in your head. He has stolen the show at several of the annual Django Reinhardt NY Festivals at Birdland, and his legendary status has earned him ambassadorial roles to the jazz world, performing alongside Oscar Peterson, Philip Catherine, and James Carter.
