Dr. Tom Dooley was a man who delighted in his sexuality, paid consequences, and yet refused to be defeated, long before "don't ask, don't tell." Dooley trained at Camp Pendleton. He died young, but was cited by John F. Kennedy for his humanitarian work in Southeastern Asia as an inspiration for the start of the Peace Corps.
