Vevay artist Donna Weaver will demonstrate her sculpture technique at Signatures of Switzerland County during the March Vevay Main Street Friday Friday. The event will be held March 6 from 6-9 pm and is free and open to the public.
A professional sculptor, accomplished painter and draftsperson, Weaver and has been employed in the toy industry for 14 years. She has also worked for the United States Mint in Philadelphia as a designer/sculptor with credits that include nine of the state quarters, commemorative coins and Congressional Gold medals.
Weaver is also a master at creating wax relief portraits. Her interest in history is reflected in the subject matter of her art portraits of historic figures and drawings of old houses and river boats.
Adhering to the high sculptural standards of portraiture in the 18th and early 19th century, Donna recreates the look, color and scale of the earlier wax portraits. When beginning a portrait, she refers to the art of the time and searches for paintings and drawings. She also looks to other finished sculptures of the person to be portrayed, resulting in a bas-relief that captures the spirit of those earlier portraits. Her portfolio includes portrayals of Simon Kenton, Benjamin Franklin, Dolly Madison, Marie Antoinette and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Vevay’s First Friday events include late night shopping and dining, live entertainment, food and drink specials, gallery openings and demonstrations and free carriage rides around downtown Vevay.
Signatures is located at 120 West Main Street in downtown Vevay, Indiana. The First Friday event is from 6-9 pm and is free and open to the public. Store hours are 10am-5pm Monday-Saturday and 11am-4pm on Sunday. First Friday hours are 10am-9pm.
