From the Madison County, North Carolina ballad singing tradition, Donna Ray Norton is the granddaughter of fiddler Byard Ray and banjo player Morris Norton, and the daughter of ballad singer Lena Jean Ray. She says, "Some people's families are ballerinas, or some people play football, or some people are cops. Ballads are our thing; this is what we do."
