Gits Documentary To Tour The Country
June 12, 2008
Story by: Michael Tedder
Director Kerry O'Kane's self-titled documentary on early '90s Seattle punks the Gits will begin playing in theaters in early July, to coincide with the 15th anniversary of lead singer Mia Zapata's murder on July 7. The Gits, which will also be released on DVD by Liberation Entertainment the day after the theatrical run begins, features interviews with the band's surviving members as well as fan-supplied archival footage of Gits performances, and tells the story of the group's rise to popularity at the start of the '90s, and the aftermath of Zapata's murder, which went unsolved for more than a decade.
O'Kane, who has directed of music videos for artists such as Tilt and Cinderblock, said she first discovered the band after seeing them featured in the 1996 Seatle music documentary Hype!. "Mia just blew my mind and I couldn't believe that this girl was murdered and they still hadn't found the killer," says O'Kane, who began interviewing the group's surviving members in 2002. "And so I went and I got some of their music, and I was so impressed, and it was hard to believe that she was gone. I thought it was egregious that they weren't able to find this person after so many years, and I felt like a film should be made to celebrate her life and the band."
Some of the film's tour dates will have special guests. The New York screening will have an after-party featuring members of Kittie, Bratmobile and Van Helsing's Curse, while San Francisco's party will feature Klaus Flouride of Dead Kennedys. The Los Angeles showing will feature Kane and Daniel House, who signed the Gits to their first record label. Portland and Seattle will feature the film's producer Jessy Bender and the remaining members of the Gits.
CMJ.com will have an extended interview with O'Kane on our blog later today, and you can find out more information about the Zapata and the murder investigation in this week's CMJ online feature .
