DOKU.ARTS - International Festival for Films on Art September 14, 2006

he International Festival for Films on Art presents films concerning a wide range of artistic production including music, literature, performing arts, architecture, cinema, photography and fine arts. The Festival not only promotes this niche genre but also allows an active and concerted appreciation of the diversity, ingenuity and quality of these films. While the focus lies on documentaries, there is the chance as well to see films that are between fiction and documentary. A further aim is to show films which transcend the boundaries between the arts, and which connect the languages of art and film. DOKU.ARTS is the only European festival that presents films from all art fields.

Program and locations
DOKU.ARTS - International Festivals for Films on Art was initiated by Andreas Lewin (film-maker, actor, fellow of the Academy of Arts 2002) in co-operation with the Academy of Arts, as principle funding and hosting organisation.

The festival presents 20-30 international films on art. The focus is on recently finished productions (within the last 2 years). We invite the filmmakers and ? if possible ? the artists to join the festival in Berlin. Beyond that, the Festival will hold a conference on the production of films on art ? a collaboration of DOKU.ARTS with the European Documentary Network, Copenhagen and the International Music and Media Center, Vienna. This conference will invite commissioning editors, producers, filmmakers and critics. It is a forum to support the exchange between the public, artists and filmmakers, as well as between the different artistic fields themselves. The films will be screened at the Akademie der Künste (cinema with 500 seats) and at the Museum für Gegenwart - Hamburger Bahnhof (150 seats).

Films on art in the Media
In the continuously shifting media landscape of today, the arts are most often covered by brief reportages and cursory, journalistic formats, even though there exist many high quality, feature length documentaries on art. It is through the promotion of these longer format films and films that possess an artistic quality in themselves that the Festival hopes to inspire and thereby challenge the politics of traditional formatting.
