Using the language of the camera, this workshop will explore the critical relationships between photographer, subject matter and the world at large, to create a meaningful body of work. One central theme of the workshop is to learn how to speak about others' stories with an awareness of their own. Students will investigate a myriad of photographers' creative choices and options in order to bring personal vision and style into documentary photography, and portraiture in particular.
Students will be required to bring their portfolio for initial review for constructive criticism. In addition, shooting assignments are designed to encourage students to go outside of their comfort zone by taking chances while shooting. During the critique, the instructor will guide participants with not only technical and aesthetic issues, but also editing skills to intensify one's personal vision.
This workshop will prepare each student with active eyes and minds, ready to discover potential images present in each moment.
