The Return of King of the Rollers...
Doc Scott
Drum 'n' Bass
Cofounding the influential record label Metalheadz Recordings with recent Japan visitor Goldie in 1994, Doc Scott was in on the early days of the d'n'b/jungle movement. Receiving a pair of turntables at the age of 18, he began playing at raves in the late '80s, eventually giving up his job as a telephone worker to DJ full time. At the time Scott began DJing, feel-good rave music was the order of the day. But Scott was into darker stuff, and became instrumental in adding the critical hip hop, dub and Detroit techno strains which gave mid-'90s drum 'n' bass its characteristic brooding sound. This sound could be heard on his initial recordings for the Absolute 2 label, including NHS, NHS, Vol. 2, and Surgery. Later, he hooked up with scene-leading 4Hero's Reinforced Recordings, issuing the 1992 classic As Nasty as I Wanna Be, a model for darkside drum 'n' bass, and the classic track "Here Come the Drumz." Leaving Reinforced, Scott and partner Goldie set up the Metalheadz label, which was to become the leading drum 'n' bass label. Issues included the lead-off single "VIP Drums," and "Far Away." Scott has also recorded for LTJ Bukem's Good Looking Records, and set up his own label, Moonshine Music, in 1996.
