It's billings like this that make me remember why I don't like going out to big-organized events like this in SF.
Everyone is treated like shit - sure there are scumbags who'll try to graffiti with pens but why treat everyone like a criminal. It just makes people who attend either harsh and abrasive towards the organizers or just puts people off entirely. I certainly don't want to attend an event where I'm being told not to bring a pen or even a bag.
Perhaps if events and event promoters treated their customers with more respect they might, in turn, be treated with more respect back on the night of the event?
