Carleton College will celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, on Saturday Oct. 29, at 5 p.m. in Severance Great Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
The Diwali service will be led by Anantanad Rambachan, professor of religion, philosophy and Asian Studies at St. Olaf College. The service will feature traditional songs, reflection and pooja (worship). Following the service students will perform traditional Indian cultural dances, song and music.
Diwali has evolved into an internationally celebrated holiday from its origins in India where homes are decorated, sweets are distributed and thousand of lamps are lit. Indians hold the holiday in much the same regard as Christmas is held in the United States.
