China from the Outside In is a special series that examines westerners who lived and traveled extensively in China during the 1930s and, in doing so, helped the world begin to understand what was then a highly mysterious country on the other side of the world. Among these peripatetic westerners was Canadian physician Norman Bethune (1890-1939), who served in China’s People’s Liberation Army during the war against Japan in the 1930s.
