The emergence of Web 2.0, the perceived "second-generation" of web-based technologies such as social networking sites and wikis, has lead to a rapid growth in the number of web-based communities and sites hosting so called social software that claims to facilitate collaboration between users.
The logs that these sites create offer a rich source of data about the human social networks they contain. Imagine a system that discovers who the real movers and shakers are, based on how they actually collaborate. Imagine a system where reciprocal relationships are recorded to produce a network map that shows how companies are linked via customers, alliances and transactions. These are just two examples of the possibilities opened up by emerging field of social network informatics.
