- Hear the unique blend of jazz, folk and traditional Indian music pioneered by Karavika
- See the creative process as they strip down and explain defining elements of their music
- Talk to Karavika about their musical influences and hear them perform original songs

Imagine the sound of a band whose members come from musical backgrounds as diverse as jazz, folk, and alternative rock, but are all trained in western classical and Indian styles…

That blank you’re drawing is what chamber ensemble Karavika aim to fill. The band most recently performed for the crowds at TEDx Gotham, the 2011 NYC Jazz Festival, and Cornelia Street Cafe’s Carnatic Music Festival, but you’ll essentially go back to the drawing board with them. First witness how they collaborate to develop their cutting-edge sound, then hear it all come together when Karavika showcases a few songs from their upcoming record.

The band will strip down songs so you can hear the ideas they initially play around with. They’ll explain how they build the mood of their melodies around traditional Indian “ragas” (scales) and “tals” (rhythm), which become the driving force behind their music even as they add layers from other genres. There will be a relaxed and open discussion to ask any questions and talk about the creative possibilities that come from tapping a mix of musical influences.
