In a city as sprawling as Houston, it can be easy to overlook some of its most fascinating features. In this new course, participants will get guided, in-depth tours of some of Houstons greatest treasures, meeting at a different site each week to learn how they came to be and the role theyve played in Houstons colorful history.

At Rice University, find an early 20th-century building with architecture that interacts with visitors to imitate the call of the frogs displaced during its construction. See the newly restored art-deco splendor of the 1940 Air Terminal Museum, home of the original Houston Municipal Airport. Feel the glory of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, erected in 1875, with its nationally acclaimed Gothic windows and original handmade pews. Hear the stories of famous early Houstonians such as Howard Hughes, William P. Hobby and Anson Jones, last president of the Republic of Texas, as you visit their final resting places in Glenwood Cemetery. Learn how the floors of the downtown tunnel system tell the story of the people and companies they lie beneath and how there are more tales to be found at the Houston Librarys 1924 Julia Ideson Building than those merely found in books.
