The Dirty Projectors is the project of Dave Longstreth, a former Yale student who left college to become one of the most prolific and unique indie singer/songwriters of the early 2000s. He’s got a crooning voice and unique approach to arrangements and both lo-fi and hi-fi production. The newest LP is the re-recording, from memory, of Black Flag’s album Damaged, a youthful influence for Dave. Jona Bechtolt is a technological multi talent: his band, YACHT, is an amalgamation of self-taught dance moves and anthemic electro-power jams all played backwards and covered in cherry cola. YACHT shows are uncluttered, inspiring sessions of improbable dancing and synchronized crowd-waving; the songs shudder happily into the air, and any preconceived notions of what makes an energetic performance are shattered by Bechtolt’s own strain of shamanistic bombast. Vampire Weekend’s starched collar, Paul Simon on safari routine is a sip of cool lemonade in New York’s muggy “serious indie” air. The band is too consistently likable for this to be more than a passing concern. A cool organ breeze and a shifting drum beat save the day, prohibiting too much snark from being slung at their New York Times featured, digitally distributed exclusively by Other Music, Columbia University, golden boy asses. So a little snark, but the class warfare anti-Strokes kind that has very little to do with the music itself.
