After selling out all 3 screenings at its World Premiere at the SXSW film festival, DIRTY PICTURES will have its California public premiere in San Jose this Saturday, April 17. And Director Etienne Sauret will be there to answer audience questions afterwards.
DIRTY PICTURES is about legendary Northern California resident and “Godfather of Psychedelics,” Dr. Alexander “Sasha” Shulgin, the rogue chemist who discovered the effects of MDMA (aka Ecstasy) and over 200 other mind-altering drugs. Shulgin’s alchemy has earned him a reputation as one of the great chemists of the 20th century.
Working from a lab at home and using himself and his wife Ann as test subjects, the pair co-authored two books “Pihkal” and “Tihkal”, describing their experiments. This brought him into conflict with the law but made him a worldwide underground hero, while also gaining him a following among the world’s leading neurochemistry researchers.
The film gets its name from Shulgin’s wry name for his molecular drawings, which he calls his “Dirty Pictures”.
DIRTY PICTURES examines the impact of Dr. Shulgin's lifelong quest to unlock the complexities of the human mind. It features memorable characters, touching relationships, and asks some very relevant questions about the limits of human consciousness, the value of perceptual experimentation, and societies legal and cultural view of mind-altering substances.
