Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is Mexico’s ancient tradition of celebrating the lives of deceased loved ones. A major cultural significance portrayed at the event is the ofrendas or altars that are made by hand to honor deceased loved ones. More than eighteen altars will be constructed along Pier View Way by local Oaxacan and Michoacan families, Palomar College students, as well as local families. In addition, there will be whimsical skeletons and sugar candy skulls that mock death to release the fear and grief and to celebrate those who shared their lives with us. Throughout the event, attendees will also enjoy a traditional Banda and Comparsa Parade that will stroll through the venue along with Ballet Folklorico, Mariachi and Mexican Regional music performances. Día merchandise will be offered for sale to include pan de muerto or bread of the dead along with traditional food and dishes from other cultures. Several artists will display their interpretations of the cycle of life and death in the event gallery. The chalk cemetery, which strikes a chord with both Mexican and non-Mexican families every year, will give everyone a chance to remember a loved one in a graphic, participatory way.
