On Sunday, January 7, at 9:45 a.m., Ted Tuel will speak at the Northfield Buddhist Meditation Center, 313½ Division Street in Northfield, on the topic of “Appropriate
Practices in the Six Realms.” Buddhists traditionally say that there are six modes of existence: humans, gods, fighting titans, animals, hell-dwellers, and hungry
ghosts. The talk will explore the following questions: What are the characteristics of each realm? Is it more helpful to see the six realms as actual places that we can be reborn into, or as mental states that we move in and out of?
How are we to behave if we find ourselves in a particular realm? How can we help others who are trapped in a difficult realm? How can we develop the ability to be fully present and alive no matter where we find ourselves?
Ted Tuel is the Practice Director of the Meditation Center. He is active in leading the Center’s Wednesday evening youth group, its Sunday evening Zen group, and its
annual January practice period. He is an ordained priest in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition, through the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center in Minneapolis.
The morning will begin with an optional orientation for newcomers at 8:30 a.m., followed by sitting meditation at 9:00, walking meditation at 9:30, and the talk at
9:45. Tea will be served afterwards. There is no charge for the talk, but contributions to the Center are always welcome.
