Design London STIR Lecture: The STEM of Service Experience February 16, 2010

"Services represent over three quarters of the output and employment in the developed economies and every hour of every day we experience a myriad of complex services – either as consumers or as service providers. Services that range from the care of a newborn child or an ageing member of our family, to complex financial services delivered over our mobile phone. We live and work in a knowledge intensive and highly networked economy, yet while Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) have transformed the products and infrastructure of the industrial age, can they play a role in service innovation. Can STEM uncover hidden wealth by transforming the value, efficiency and effectiveness of public, professional and business services, or may we lose sight of the essential human and emotional components of service by industrialising their design and provision.
