Lecture summary:
This lecture considers how effective ways of teaching might be developed to facilitate real learning, focusing in particular on art education. Drawings produced by children in the UK and in Australia will be examined to see how the children have encoded meaning in their art work. Different ways of reading art practices within school education contexts and how these readings construct teacher and learner identities will also be considered. These reflections will then be placed in the broader context of learning and teaching, and Professor Atkinson will put forward the notion of pedagogy against the state, exploring ideas through which real learning can be effectively supported.
