December's Soap Box Lecture: Leonard Shlain: "Art and Physics"

Leonard Shlain proposes that the visionary artist is the first member of a culture to see the world in a new way. Then, nearly simultaneously, a revolutionary physicist discovers a new way to think about the world. In his book, "Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time & Light," Shlain escorts readers through the classical, medieval, Renaissance and modern eras, and shows how the artists' images, when superimposed on the physicists' concepts, create a compelling fit.

In his talk at Bernal Bubbles, Shlain will juxtapose specific art works of famous artists with the world-changing ideas of great thinkers. Giotto and Galileo, da Vinci and Newton, Picasso and Einstein, Duchamp and Bohr, and Matisse and Heisenberg are just a few of the provocative pairings.

Leonard Shlain is the author of three national best sellers: "Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time & Light" (HarperColllins), "The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image" (VikingPenguin), and "Sex, Time and Power: How Women's Sexuality Shaped Human Evolution" (VikingPenguin). Each has been critically acclaimed, translated, and used as textbooks in many art schools and universities. He lectures widely and has been the speaker at NASA, Smithsonian, and Harvard. David Gergen interviewed him for the Jim Lehrer News Hour and he is a frequent guest on NPR. The NY Time's Ideas section has featured his theories. He is the Chief of Laparoscopic Surgery at California Medical Center in San Francisco.
