GONE TO THE GRINDHOUSE - Sunday, April 22, 2007
7pm: Dwain Esper's MANIAC (1934)
He menaced women with weird desires! In the good old days, exploitation filmmakers and exhibitors (who were often one and the same) toured the country with their film prints to spread the word about the perils of sexually transmitted diseases, drugs, teenage prostitution, and other social horrors while turning a sizable profit in the process. Audiences had it all; they felt enlightened and morally outraged and still got to see all the sex, violence, and corruption they wanted. We know you'll enjoy this evening's presentations!
8:30pm: Albert T. Viola's PREACHERMAN
"Are you sure this is the Lord's work, Reverend?" Directed by, and starring, the pompadour-sporting Albert T. Viola, who's obviously having a ball in the lead role, Preacherman follows the title character--a slick-as-fresh-owl-shit con man and pulpit-hammering holy roller--as he drinks gallons of homemade rotgut, screws the gap-toothed populace, and pilfers the poor box across Hazzard County and throughout the Carolinas. - Joseph Golden
And we'll end our trip down memory lane with a truly jaw-dropping cinematic experience:
Lee Frost's THE BLACK GESTAPO
They are the Ghetto Warriors... some call them The Black Gestapo! The Black Gestapo's gonzo concept makes it a must-see for Blaxploitation fans, if only because it uses Third Reich newsreel footage for a title sequence backed by "wocka-chikka wocka-chikka" funk music. It's a laughable slab of '70s cheese with a ridiculous plot, gutter-trawling script, and bad (or nonexistent) acting, which makes it pure, politically incorrect grindhouse entertainment.
