In the sixteenth century, Venice was one of the largest and richest cities in Europe. Demand for paintings fostered a climate of rivalry and innovation. The MFA and the Louvre have organized a ticketed exhibition of approximately 60 works of the three greatest Venetian painters of that century, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese. Juxtapositions of two, three or four of these masterworks demonstrate how much these three artists not only influenced one another, but inspired countless later artists. Together these three artists created a body of work that defined the “Venetian style” with loose technique rich coloring, and pastoral or sensual subject matter. This is a feast for the intellect as well as the senses.

After lunch on our own in one of the MFA’s three restaurants, we take the bus to the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Garden. Here you’ll stroll through 35 acres of rolling woodlands and lawns with exhibitions of large outdoor contemporary sculpture. There are also exhibition galleries.
