In Dan Kennedy’s new exhibition of paintings titled, “DARWIN’S GHOSTS” the historical imagination is addressed as a collective ghost story, populated and narrated by a cast of real and imaginary characters and locations, where the phantoms of the past, continue to speak to our modern culture. Kennedy explores layered, painterly narratives of historical fiction and popular culture. The opening reception for "Darwin's Ghosts" paintings by Dan Kennedy is on Saturday, October 4th 2008, from 7pm till 11pm at Gallery Three. The exhibit will be on view until November 8th.
Dan Kennedy lives and works in Toronto and graduated from the Ontario College of Art. His work has been featured in Juxtapoz Magazine, Bordercrossings, Canadian Art Magazine, The Star and National Post. He is the recipient of many awards including the Governor General’s medal and Canadian arts council grants. He has shown extensively across Canada and the U.S, most recently with exhibitions,”Through the looking Glass” at the Glenbow Museum, “Lost In The Echo” at the Edward Day gallery and “Dust of Oblivion” at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York.
Kennedy paintings have strangely mysterious content, with youthful images and unorthodox use of text amongst commercialism closely associated with the corporate world and advertising. "Darwin's Ghosts" portrays Charles Darwin and Captain Fitzroy (the suicidal Captain of the H.M.S. Beagle), Geologists and Ghosts, Volcanoes and Vigilantes, Beards and Delirium, Homosapiens and the Milky Way galaxy and the year 1859 (publication of “The Origins of Species”). With random juxtaposition all become actors and settings in stories of evolution, fantasy and history. Kennedy builds layers in oil, glazes, and faded enamels, preserving his findings like specimens. From this ephemera of the past emerges an optically dense and evocative world; a museum of language and archetypes infused with ambiguities and mystery.
Please come experience the stories untold by Dan Kennedy in his exhibit "Darwin's Ghosts" opening Saturday, October 4th 2008 at Gallery Three, and is open to the public. The art will be on exhibit until November 8th.
