David McGee: Tetelestai - Notebooks of the Black Sea December 3, 2003

Drawing inspiration from sources as varied as Bob Dylan, Charles Mingus, Conrad Aiken, Cornell West, Tupac Shakur and James Baldwin, Houston-based painter David McGee explores contemporary racial complexities using the techniques and imagery of 16th - 18th century painting. McGee's paintings read like personal journals and flow with the smoothness of a jazz music score. Tetelestai: Notebooks of the Black Sea, McGee's first exhibition in Houston in five years, features work from the past ten years alongside a new series of paintings and drawings that represent a radical departure for the artist, as well as a deepened exploration of his personal iconography.
