David Boggs' latest landscape paintings show a definite range, exhibiting pieces of meticulous realism to gauzy abstract skyscapes. Boggs is inspired by the open spaces and dominant skies of the Great Plains area where he lives. With the topography of west central Minnesota being so much like that of the Netherlands, Boggs draws upon the Dutch landscape tradition, awarding the sky the greater portion of the composition in these paintings. With the sky so great a part of any scene in the area, the move in that direction comes naturally. That dominance of sky communicates the spirit of landscape. The paints are oils on linen and watercolor on paper. Several of the paintings include the use of encaustic material. The wax of the encaustic gives the works an atmospheric haze, enhancing the sense of mystery and stillness.
