David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World and one of the designated laureates for the World Food Prize being held in Des Moines, Iowa during Hunger Week, will preach at Faith Lutheran Church in Clive on Sunday, October 10 at the 8:45 and 10:00 a.m. worship services.
Beckmann's message is part of Faith Lutheran's "Hunger Sunday" events and part of the Des Moines area's events being held in conjunction with Hunger Week and Bread for the World. That afternoon, he will deliver a pep talk at the beginning of the annual Hunger Hike at the Iowa State Capitol. Beckmann will be honored with the World Food Prize on October 14.
As president of Bread for the World since 1991, Beckmann has lead successful campaigns to strengthen American political commitment to overcome hunger and poverty both in the United States and around the world. Beckmann is also president of the Alliance to End Hunger, which engages diverse American institutions in building the political will to end hunger. Beckmann has testified in Congress 18 times since 2000, and has appeared on various radio and television programs. Among his books are Transforming the Politics of Hunger and Exodus from Hunger, which is scheduled to be published in October of 2010.
Beckmann has degrees from Yale University, Christ Seminary and the London School of Economics. He has received six honorary degrees and has overseen projects in Bolivia and Ecuador.
Faith Lutheran Church is located at 104th and Hickman Road in Clive, to the north of University Avenue and the east of Interstates-35/80. It is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) denomination.
