In his Beyond the Classroom Presentation, "Using Dance Movement Therapy to Heal African Survivors of War," dance and movement therapist David Alan Harris will talk about his experiences in working with former child soldiers in Sierra Leone. Harris combined his careers in human rights advocacy and choreography to work on the ground in Sierra Leone's Kailahun District on an innovative dance and movement program for 12 former child soldiers, all of whom were orphans who survived the brutality of Sierra Leone's 11-year civil war. His work there has demonstrated the power of dance and movement therapy interventions to enhance healing among adolescent survivors of war and organized violence.
Harris's residency is a project of the UM Department of Dance, ARHU and the First Year Book program and is part of the University of Maryland's Semester on Peace.
