Dr. Alex Filippenko, one of the world’s most highly cited astronomers, will present Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe featuring his observations of very distant exploding stars, which show that the expansion of the Universe is now speeding up, rather than slowing down due to gravity as expected. Over the largest distances, our Universe seems to be dominated by a repulsive “dark energy,” often considered to be the most important unsolved problem in physics.
Filippenko has been recognized by several major prizes including election to the National Academy of Sciences in 2009, and currently serves as Professor of Astronomy at the UC Berkeley, where he has been voted the “Best Professor” on campus 6 times.
Tickets are $30, $12 for students 21 and under and are available by calling 925-373-6800 or visiting www.bankheadtheater.org.
