Dare 2B Digital: A Conference on Careers for Young Women February 12, 2011

The Conference is designed to provide middle school and high school girls with a better understanding of the exciting and creative careers available using computing technologies. During the event - in labs, workshops, keynote sessions, scavenger hunts and a meet-a-mentor luncheon, students interact with members of the industry to gain exposure and an inside look at careers in business and technology.

About the event:

* There's a lot of hand-wringing going on these days about the lack of gender diversity in Silicon Valley. It's an embarrassing problem for such a seemingly open-minded community.
* This one-day event for young women in the 7-10 grades is aimed squarely at the next generation of San Francisco Bay Area entrepreneurs and technologists;
* This interactive program provides girls with the knowledge that computational literacy enables success in a wide range of careers.
* The event will be held Saturday, February 12 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View where girls and their parents will experience the new exhibit, Revolution: The First 2000 Years of Computing - a vivid modern exhibition designed for technical and non-technical audiences.
* Local technologists from companies like Apple, Cisco, IBM, Google and Microsoft will teach workshops and labs for the teen women on topics including: Robotics, Digital Photography, How to Create Your Own Movie, Basic Computer Programming, Digital Communication, Creating Android Apps and more;
* Parents can attend sessions on Financing College Education, Facebook for Parents, Online Safety and Handling Teen Stress;
* The event is sponsored by an A list of local tech companies including: Microsoft, Oracle, Apple, Brocade, HP, IBM, Mozilla, SAP Labs, Symantec and eBay;
* Participants can experience a TelePresence demo hosted by Cisco;
* Volunteers from many of the sponsoring companies will participate in the meet a mentor luncheon for the young women.
