This engrossing documentary follows Daniel Smith, an eccentrically brilliant musician and visual artist, as he leads his four siblings and best friend to indie-rock stardom. Beginning in 1994, when the youngest band member was 10 years old, the Danielson Famile performed in white vintage nurse costumes to symbolize the healing power of the "Good News." Though tepidly received by the Christian music world, the clan is widely embraced by the mainstream independent music community as an outsider curiosity with innovative music. As members of the band drift away, Daniel faces the struggle of becoming a solo act. He eventually mentors an unknown singer-songwriter named Sufjan Stevens, whose subsequent success is in stark contrast to the music world's uneasy reception of Danielson. Danielson: a Family Movie is both engaging and entertaining as it explores the themes of unbridled creativity vs. accessibility, Christian faith vs. popular culture, underground music vs. survival, and family vs. individuality.
