In this day and age, we’re all only steps away from any number of factors that could cause our life order to be disrupted, explode, crash and forever change the way we look at life. This October, Found Gallery explores this theme with photographer Daniel DeSure's "Wouldnt it be nice.”
DeSure’s photography examines the themes that come to light when society is examined under the context of this knowledge - the fact that there are millions of people all moving through life trying to avoid collisions. The same principles inherent in space flight - the takeoff, navigation and landing - can apply directly to our lives, if only in that crashing becomes an eventuality, not something to be avoided. DeSure’s work examines the ways in which we can minimize their impact on our lives, ways we can crash and continue going. He also explores the idea of spirituality, contemplation, and the more superficial material remedies such as the new car, new house, new coffee machine, new girlfriend, and new drugs that we use to soften the blow. Acceptance of the turbulence of life brings about a new way of living, one where crashing isn’t the point, where moving and stopping, crashing and going again, are all part of the same process. Only once we recognize this fact are we able to travel a more constructive path.
About the Artist:
Daniel DeSure has worked as a visual artist and art producer in Los Angeles for over five years. He pursued his undergraduate degree at the California Institute of the Arts in 2000 studying experimental film and video. In 2003, he began producing art and in early 2006 he produced Sleepwalkers with Doug Aitken for the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In early 2007 Daniel founded Commonwealth, an art production, consulting and design house specializing in large scale installations, films, experiential design, publication design, and events that incorporate new media. Omer Fast and Francesco Vezzoli were the first two artists to work through Commonwealth, and both projects have recently made it onto the covers of ArtForum and Flash Art magazine.
When he is not producing through Commonwealth, DeSure is creating his own art through photography, film and new media. “Wouldn’t it be nice” is Daniel’s first show at Found Gallery.
