Dance Appreciation Series: Introduction to Coppélia
Presented by Singapore Dance Theatre in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay
As a lead-up to the main performance, the dancers of the Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT)will mesmerise young audiences with an hour of fun and adventure, as they bring the
characters from Coppélia to life.
Originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon and based on the story by E.T.A Hoffman,
Coppélia tells the story of the misadventures of a boy named Franz, who falls in love with a gorgeous life-sized doll named Coppélia. Unknowingly, he becomes embroiled in the wrath of
his jealous girlfriend, Swanhilda, and the hilarious delusions of a mad scientist.
Presented with narration, the audience will learn interesting facts about this ballet and pantomime, and be introduced to the main characters. Dance excerpts from the full-length ballet will be performed. There will also be a meet and greet session with Coppélia, Franz, Swanilda and their friends after the performance! Probably one of the best-known and most performed comedy
ballets, Coppélia promises fun, laughter and enjoyment for all.
Come dressed in your favourite character costumes and get to take photographs with the cast after the show!
