D-Day Conneaut is the annual re-creation of the amphibious allied landings upon the beaches of Normandy France, June 6th 1944. The venue is Conneaut Township Park whose bluffs overlook a 250 yard beach remarkably resembling the Omaha Beach shore line. Allied and Axis re-enactors, along with the support of the United States Naval Reserve, the United States Coast Guard, and private contributors bring together all the elements of the landing. The combination of a sea borne invasion via landing craft similar to those used during D-Day, along with replicas of period aircraft flying overhead, simulate the amphibious assault of fixed Axis troop emplacements located on an elevated bluff overlooking the beach. This free to the public event offers an educational and historical experience unmatched in the United States. All spectators have an excellent and unobstructed view of the battlefield. On the parade ground above, an encampment of Allied and Axis units provide spectators the entire 1940's military experience. Sea side and camp life of the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who participated in the actual landings are realistically recreated with original equipment, uniforms and vehicles. Capping off the event is a 1940's USO style show and dance. Featuring a live Big Band, the show is held at the Conneaut American Legion that evening. This event is a truly impressive undertaking and is only topped by the presence of the real heroes of D-Day and campaigns throughout the war - our honored Veterans.

Because of Chuck Hansen and his wife, I had the privilege of bringing my Father (Rangers/5th Bat), my brother and his son to the event this year (2008). Though downscaled, it's still better than just watching war films. Dad wore his Battle-of-the-Bulge group's cap, and was one of the many "celebrities" whom I heard conversing back and forth, comparing notes and experiences. Many folks stopped him to ask and thank him for his service. Being a member of the U.S.O., I was a bit disappointed it wasn't represented. Maybe next year. Is there a date set for 2009? Let me know. I'm sure if I'm allotted a piece of ground, I can have the USO on site, too. Thank you. Dad truly enjoyed it. Many email addresses were exchanged and I'm sure we'll be returning next year. Thank you all .. for the tremendous effort it takes to pull such an operation off. God bless you all.
