The award-winning Cypress String Quartet (Cecily Ward, violin; Tom Stone, violin; Ethan Filner, viola; and Jennifer Kloetzel, cello) described by Time Out New York as the "lauded San Francisco foursome" returns to the Firehouse Arts Center with a dynamic tour-de-force all-Dvorak program. The concert showcases the diversity of the quartet repertoire Dvorak produced, and includes selections from 'Cypresses', his String Quartet in F Major, Op. 96, 'American'; and his String Quartet No. 13 in G Major, Op. 106.
Cellist Jennifer Kloetzel explains, "In this concert we will be exploring the different voices of Dvorak. For example, Op. 96, and Op. 106 were written only two years apart, but the former has a decidedly American sound and was written in 15 days, while...the latter is steeped in Slavic rhythms and melodies and...took a full year to write once he returned from America."
Known for its elegant performances, the Cypress String Quartet has been praised by Gramophone for its "artistry of uncommon insight and cohesion,' and its sound has been called "beautifully proportioned and powerful," by The Washington Post.
The Cypress continues to maintain a busy national and international tour schedule, making appearances on concert series and in venues including Cal Performances, Kennedy Center, Library of Congrees, Stanford Lively Arts, Krannert Center, and the Ravinia Festival. As a vibrant member of the San Francisco arts community, the quartet dedicates itself to reflecting and enriching the city's cultural landscape through collaborations with the DeYoung Museum and San Francisco Girls Chorus, among others.
The quartet members will be available after the program to meet and chat with audience members.
