Wednesday, October 26 – 7:30 PM CURRENT GERMAN CINEMA
Los Angeles Premiere! ALMANYA: WELCOME TO GERMANY (ALMANYA: WILLKOMMEN IN DEUTSCHLAND), 2011, Concorde Filmverleih, 97 min. Dir. Yasemin Samdereli. In contemporary Germany, patriarch Huseyin (Vedat Erincin) insists his entire family accompany him on a holiday to Turkey. In a flashback to 1964, young Huseyin arrives in Germany for the first time, with the unglamorous title of being the one-million-and-first guest worker in the country. As the film switches back and forth between the two time periods, a light-as-air and colorfully punchy comedy of manners emerges, focusing on generations of cultural misunderstandings inside one German-Turkish household. Official selection of the Berlin International Film Festival 2011. In German and Turkish with English subtitles. Opening night reception to follow in the Egyptian courtyard. Free to all ticket-holders.
