José Raúl Viera Linares, who served in various positions in the Cuban government from 1961–90, will speak about “Cuba: Past and Present – A Lived History,” Sept. 19, 3 p.m. in the Carole Weinstein International Center Commons. Sponsored by the Office of International Education, the lecture is free and open to the public.
Viera was a teacher and sugar mill manager before entering government service in 1961 as diplomatic attaché at the Cuban embassies in Spain, Honduras and Chile. At the Bolivian embassy, he was second secretary, before returning to Cuba as information analyst for the Interior Ministry from 1964-66. He later served as legal counsel to the Cuban mission to the United Nations and was head of the Division on Internal Organizations for the foreign affairs ministry. He served as first deputy minister of foreign affairs from 1981–90.
Viera holds a bachelor of law degree from Havana University, a certificate of English studies from Louisiana State University and a certificate in Cuban property rights studies from the Union of Cuban Lawyers.
