Experience a spectacular voyage through the heart of Russia. We will travel the scenic and historic Russian waterways, along the Neva, across two of Europe's largest lakes, Lake Ladoga and Lake Onega, down the Volga-Baltic Waterway through river lockages, and on the historic Volga.
St. Petersburg holds the fascination of a time past. Created by Peter the Great to be his "window on Europe,", it is considered to be the cultural heart of modern Russia. Cruise the canals around the Church on Spilled Blood and visit Peterhof and its spectacular fountains. Visits to small towns and the enchanting Golden Ring cities of Yaroslavl, Kostroma and Uglich provide unique opportunities to delve into Russian culture. In Yaroslavl we will visit the Savior Monastery and Church of Elijah the Prophet. See local handcrafts in Kostroma. In Kitzhi we'll explore the exciting Museum of Wooden Architecture. In picturesque Uglich the Cathedral of the Transfiguration is a reverent and historic stop. We will join a Russian family home for breakfast, as well. At the samll farming town of Goritsy is the Assumption Monastery of St. Cyril on the White Lake.
Moscow brings a chance to experience the grandeur of Red Square and the Kremlin. It is a city of contrasta, with modern skyscrapers alongside ancient monnasteries. Beautiful churches and historic buildings are being restored to their former glory. The changing economy is bustling and offers exciting shops and street markets to explore. Clint Denn calls cruising “the only way to travel.”
He’s not talking about a Caribbean cruise but rather a trip to Russia by way of a cruise ship. Clint and his wife, Susan, took a cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow on board a 360-foot ship last summer. The ship featured a 41-member crew and carried 150 passengers. Local guides were available for tours and Denn said that contrary to popular belief, Russians “really do like Americans.”
“Absolutely nothing we saw made us think any other way,” he said in a phone interview on Tuesday morning. “If you visited a bazaar, there was always someone who spoke English. We were stopped a couple of times with our cameras but it was only because they were curious about what we were doing.”
The Denns were, in fact, taking photos and capturing footage for a travelogue motion picture called “Cruising Russia — St. Petersburg to Moscow.”
“St. Petersburg is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the world,” he said.
While in Russia, the Denns visited some interesting cities and monasteries along the way.
“You’ll see the National Dance Revue and hear church choirs. There are bands everywhere you go,” he said. “It may surprise people that there is so much music in Russia.”
Clint has enjoyed careers in photography, acting, travel, writing and underwater adventures. He has been making travelogues, like this one, for 40 years and has 32 films, 12 of which are still shown at various events around the globe.
“We’ve been around the world a couple of times,” he said.
Susan, a retired Los Angeles schoolteacher, now travels with him.
“We have a small motor home now and just go around the country,” he said.
