Reaves Gallery is pleased to announce Crowned With Thorns, an exhibition of select works by San Francisco Artist Gregg Cassin. Cassin's collection will be on view at Reaves Gallery from November 5 through 29, 2008. An opening reception will be held on Friday November 14, from 6 - 9pm. The exhibition and reception are both free and open to the public.
Cassin's work is an attempt to honor the sacredness of the human spirit. By working with images that illustrate the creative power of suffering (i.e. oppression, loss and illness) and its ability to transform us. These works often use images of "strangers" (children, women, people of color... representing outsiders) that have been cast-off and later rescued becoming unlikely icons speaking to us of our innocence.
His work is also a practice of spiritual reclaiming. Stealing back from this world and modern religion what is most dear to us...our sense of self, having a voice and talking/taking back. The oppressive powers of this world, esp. religion and mainstream culture on the marginalized are fuel to his fire. The overwhelmingly destructive force of religion and its spokes people, is present in our daily lives. Prejudice, hatred and intolerance are not only accepted, but are honored and revered. Cassin's work is his voice and it is...part scream... part song... part cry... part prayer.
Gregg Cassin, a self-taught artist has painted since 1999. His sexuality, HIV status, Catholic roots, anger and hope all greatly influence his work. He lives in San Francisco with the greatest joy is his life, his daughter Breauna. His current show entitled Crowned With Thorns, will be on display from November 5 through 29.
Free and open to the public.
